Senior Litigation Trial Paralegal

Law firm seeks a Senior Litigation Paralegal with 7 years of experience to assist attorneys in the special education practice area. The Paralegal will prepare legal documents, such as memos, briefs, pleadings, and appellate filings; handle case intake and client contact; conduct legal research; summarize student records; administrative hearings and administrative record preparation; timeline preparations; preparing settlement agreements; and marketing and presentation preparation. Other duties require collecting, analyzing and utilizing information to make recommendations to the supervising attorney and to prepare documents and materials on laws, agency regulations, and policies. Candidate may supervise, train, and manage the workflow of Secretaries and other Paralegals in a team environment.
Candidate will use discovery phase databases, perform cite checking and proofreading of briefs; handle case management of the discovery process, including drafting notices and subpoenas, preparing for deposition, responding to written discovery, and drafting discovery motions, witness and attorney declarations. He/she will prepare witness interview memoranda, review and summarize documents such as deposition and court transcripts; prepare and maintain privilege logs; assist drafting and assembling motion papers and exhibits; assisting with filings of pleadings and briefs; assist during meetings, hearings, depositions, arbitrations, mediations, and communicate with opposing counsel and court staff.
Paralegal will assist with trial preparation and drafting motions and briefs; maintain trial calendar; draft pretrial statements and settlement conference memoranda; facilitate vendor preparation of graphs and demonstrative exhibits; assist attorneys at trial to maintain trial software; serve as main liaison between trial attorneys and litigation support team, and work collaboratively to build electronic databases. The Senior Litigation Paralegal will also prepare costs and draft fee declarations; prepare post-trial documents; draft and serve abstracts of judgment; and monitor and renew judgments for collection. The hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with overtime, weekend, and short-notice travel flexibility needed.
The Litigation Paralegal must have a strong knowledge of the California Code of Civil Procedure, California Rules of Court, local court rules, the California Education Code, and other state and federal statutes concerning student education specific to students that present with disabilities. The Litigation Paralegal must have extensive knowledge of relevant legal and special education terminology, procedures, and deadlines. Excellent communication skills, a strong attention to detail, and superior analytical and resolution skills are necessary.
Candidate should have familiarity with various software including Concordance, Eclipse, TextMap, TrialDirector, TrialPad, and Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word and Excel. A paralegal certificate from an ABA approved program or an affidavit with work experience sufficient to comply with California Business and Professions Code Sections 6450-6456 is required; candidate must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience. This position has billable hours requirements.
